n8n, founded in Berlin in 2019, is a visual workflow builder with the option to drop into code12. Its AI Agent node connects a chat model to one or more tools and lets the agent decide which to call; at least one tool must be connected3.

Best for: Companies with a technical owner that want agents inside workflows they can self-host, with human review of any tool call in the channel the reviewer already uses.

Not the right fit for: Operations teams with nobody comfortable with workflow logic, or companies that want to resell or host n8n for others.

Human review of tool calls

n8n can pause a workflow before an agent uses a tool. The reviewer sees which tool the agent wants to call and with what parameters; on approval the tool runs with those inputs, and on denial it does not run and the agent is told. Review can be required for all tools or selected ones, works in sub-agents, and can be answered in n8n Chat, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, WhatsApp Business, Google Chat or Outlook4.

Hosting and licence

The Community Edition is self-hosted and free, but it lacks environments, external secrets, log streaming, projects, SSO, shared credentials, Git version control and multi-main mode5. Audit logging and log streaming are Enterprise features6. The Sustainable Use License permits use only for a company's own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use, and enterprise-marked files need a commercial licence7.

How it is billed

Cloud plans are billed per execution, where an execution is one run of a whole workflow regardless of its steps or data volume. Prices are published in euros, billed annually: Starter €20 a month for 2,500 executions with a five-minute limit per run, Pro €50 for 10,000 with a 40-minute limit, and a self-hosted Business plan at €667 for 40,000 with SSO and Git version control6.

Published evidence

  • Vodafone. n8n reports that Vodafone launched 33 workflows from August 2024, saving 5,000 person-days and £2.2 million in avoided costs, with continued savings of about £300,000 a month in 2025. Vendor-reported.8

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Human-in-the-loop review shows the reviewer which tool the agent wants to use and with what parameters, before it runs.
  • Can run on the company’s own servers, which keeps data and credentials in-house.
  • Executions count whole workflow runs regardless of steps, which makes complex flows cheaper to forecast.
  • Publishes a named, quantified case: Vodafone (vendor-reported).

Limits

  • The Sustainable Use License allows use only for internal business, non-commercial or personal purposes.
  • The Community Edition lacks SSO, projects, environments, log streaming and Git version control; audit logging is Enterprise-only.
  • Cloud plans cap execution time (five minutes on Starter, 40 on Pro).
  • Visual but technical: agents are built as workflows, which suits a technical owner more than an operations lead.

Choose another option if: No one on the team will own the workflows, or you need audit logging without an Enterprise contract. Lindy or OpenLazarus ask less of the operator.

Pricing

Published in euros, billed annually: Cloud Starter €20 a month for 2,500 executions; Pro €50 for 10,000; self-hosted Business €667 for 40,000. Enterprise on request.

Questions to ask before building on n8n

  • Who on our team will own the workflows and the server they run on?
  • Which tool calls should require review, and in which channel will reviewers answer?
  • Do we need audit logging, and therefore Enterprise?
  • Does our intended use fit the Sustainable Use License?
